Weddings r not us
Bungling justice of the peace (magistrate, or judge) marries wrong couple at wedding
He married a couple of people who were witnesses at the wedding instead of the couple who were supposed to be getting married. But he soon rectified his mistake - he divorced them, and then he married the correct couple.
It was a pretty profitable mistake because when he calculated his legal fees he charged for the wrong wedding, for the divorce, and for the right wedding.
So his final bill might have looked something like this: legal fee for conducting the wrong wedding $…, legal fee for rectifying the wrong wedding, $…. legal fee for conducting the correct wedding $..

`The Hungarians employed in the ironworks at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by their queer language frequently cause trouble, and many serious mistakes are made by them, as well as by those with whom they transact business, says the Philadelphia Press.
The latest error was rather amusing. A couple of that nationality, desiring to be married, called on a justice of the peace, and took along a Hungarian couple to act as witnesses. The strange names confused the well-meaning justice, and instead of marrying the first-mentioned couple he united the witnesses `for better or for worse’.
Some time afterwards, news of his mistake having reached him, he sent word to both the couples to came before him again. When they appeared he divorced the couple he had already married, and joined the right oouple. He then wound up the complications of ceremonies by sending in a bill for two marriages and one divorce.’
Talks to the angels
An American girl says her religious beliefs include talking to the angels
The girl, who lives near Calhoun, Iowa, claimed that she regularly talks with the angels and says that during one conversation with them she met a particularly beautiful angel who lifted her high in the sky so that she could see the whole world.
The girl said that the angel warned her: “All shall be destroyed”, and said that the angel added “Woe unto him that is not ready for the Great Day.”
She said the angel warned her that Calhoun will be the first place to be destroyed. It will first be devastated by an earthquake and then a whirlwind, and then whatever is left will be destroyed by a `great fire.’

`THE JUDGMENT DAY COM1NG - AN AMERICAN PROPHECY
The Iowa (in the United States) `Churdan Bell’ (newspaper) of April 2nd. 1887, says: — There is great excitement among the colored people and ignorant whites along the base of the Kenesaw mountain, in Cobb and Gordon counties.
For sometime a colored girl named Lillie Marles, near Calhoun, has been visited with awe by her associates. She claims to hold converse with the angels, who hav told her many wonderful events of the future. She was commanded to ascend the neighbouring hill, where she would have a revelation made to her. She returned in deep ecstacy. She claimed that when she reached the summit an angel of great beauty lifted her high up in the air, whence she could overlook the world. “All shall be destroyed,” said the angel. “On the first Saturday in December next an earthquake will swallow up Calhoun. This will be accompanied by a whirlwind. Then afire will burn all that is left, and woe unto him that is not ready for the great day.”
Many other things were said, all of which is listened to with the greatest interest by the colored people. The excitement thus created has been fanned into a fierce flame by the appearance of a Greek cross suspended over Mount Kenesaw. It looked as if it were of rainbow origin. After hanging for half an hour before the astonished citizens it slowly dissolved. Several times since (previously) the apparition has been witnessed, and thus the terror, which at first was confined to the negroes, has now extended to the whites, and the result is, prayer meetings of great interest. The first Saturday in December is looked forward to as a day of terror.’
Sucked dog rabies bite
A son tried to save his father from a horrible death by sucking a bite that had been inflicted on him by a dog that had rabies
The victim was bitten on the hand by the dog, a terrier, which was immediately destroyed, although it had shown no sign of rabies. His son sucked the wound, and it was later cauterised by a doctor.
Soon afterwards his father became paralysed in his face and hand, and also suffered from spasms in his throat. These conditions were successfully treated by his doctor, but later he displayed signs of hydrophobia, which spread rapidly.
He died in agony about two months after he had been bitten by the dog, and in his final hours, when he was writhing in agony, he had to be held down by several men.

`AT Bolton (England) a man named William C. Mullett has died from hydrophobia. He was bitten on the hand in October last by a terrier, which was immediately destroyed, though the animal had shown no sign of rabies. The wound, which bled freely, was sucked by the son before it was cauterised by a doctor, and it healed in a short time. In December Mullett had paralysis in the face and head, which was cured, as was a suhsequent attack of spasms in the throat. Ultimately, however, he showed symptoms of hydrophobia, which developed rapidly. It took several men to hold him down for a few hours before death relieved him from acute agony.’
